An Overview of Himmel Park

Located at 1000 N. Tucson Blvd., Himmel Park spans 25.4 acres and lies in Ward 6 of Tucson, AZ. This expansive urban park is a local favorite, offering facilities such as the Himmel Park Branch Library, a grass amphitheater, two playgrounds, a swimming pool, and eight lighted tennis courts. The park also includes a multipurpose grass playing field, ideal for hosting four full-size soccer fields.

With its prime location just three blocks wide by two-and-a-half blocks long, Himmel Park is bordered by Tucson Boulevard to the west, 1st Street to the north, and Treat Avenue to the east. Its southern boundary sits just north of 3rd Street, making it easily accessible to the surrounding neighborhoods.

The History Behind Himmel Park

The land for Himmel Park (Wikipedia) was purchased by the City of Tucson in 1935 from Alvina Himmel Edmonson for $3,500. As part of the agreement, the park was named after her parents. In 1936, a pool was constructed in the park as part of a Works Progress Administration project. Over the years, Himmel Park expanded in size and amenities. In 1944, the park grew substantially with the purchase of three additional city blocks, bringing its total area to 25.4 acres.

One of the park’s notable features was the Southern Pacific 1673 steam locomotive, which was on display between 1962 and 2000 near the WPA pool. The locomotive was eventually moved to the Southern Arizona Transportation Museum in downtown Tucson, but it remains an important part of the park's history.

Additionally, in 1961, the Himmel Park Branch Library, Tucson's first library branch, was built in the park's northeast corner. This library has continued to serve the community as a hub of learning and culture ever since.
